Poetry in the Brew welcomes two veteran Nashville poets to the December second Saturday reading: feature Brian Daly and guest host Dana Malone.

December Feature Brian Daly

BDaly head for Brew 2Just in time for the holidays, Brian Daly reads from his work-in-progress, Drunk for Christmas. His publication credits include Pearl, Chiron Review, Nerve Cowboy, Penny Dreadful Review, and Impetus. Founder of Black Greyhound Media, he published Mighty Good Land by Dan Powers (2006), with a blurb by President Jimmy Carter, and his own first collection, Lesbian Trapped in a Man’s Body (2001). Daly was among the core group of so-called “Dreadful House poets” who met monthly for seances at the home of former Windows on the Cumberland host C Ra McGuirt in the late ‘90s. He graduated from Dartmouth and works as a corporate technical writer. Rated R.

December Guest Host Dana Malone

1082489_643155825694713_475917298_nDana Malone is a writer, writing coach, speaker and performance artist who has lived in Nashville long enough to call it her hometown. She is a former professor at Tennessee State University and Watkins College of Art, Design & Film.  She has written extensively on the work of confessional poet Anne Sexton, whose work has influenced her. (Other favorite writers include Sonia Sanchez, Adrienne Rich, Silas House and Robert Morgan.) Dana is a member of the Appalachian Writers Workshop and has studied under Gwendolyn Brooks, Al Young, and Lisel Mueller (Pulitzer Prize, 1997). Although she has read/performed poetry here and abroad, Dana credits Nashville’s long-running Windows on the Cumberland for getting her started . . . and for venues like Poetry in the Brew that continue in the Windows spirit. Her current project, “I belong to the band”, pays tribute to the work of The Band, an Americana/rock music group, while addressing universal and autobiographical themes.
