This month, Poetry in the Brew celebrates its third anniversary with two of Nashville’s premier spoken word artists, feature Jamie Zoe Givens and guest host Honest Lewis. Join us for what is sure to be an exciting night of poetry. Thank you to all the poets and supporters over the last three years who have made Poetry in the Brew the reading it is today.

July Feature Jamie Zoe Givens

Pieces like “Shallow Jazz Roots,” her poem about youthful indoctrination into jazz, show why Jamie Zoe Givens is the quintessential performance poet. In it, she conveys the sensuality of rhythms and discovered truths with a spoken music and groove that would make the Beats wake up and take notice. She’s been known to hurl her book across the floor from behind the microphone as she channels the twisted sermon of a desert zealot. From her hot springs verse to her spiritual advisor role on a reworking of the Ken Kesey bus trip, to collecting her grandmother’s and great grandmother’s own words, Jamie lives and breathes poetry and prose. Since first appearing in Nashville’s poetry scene of the mid to late nineties, she’s been a regular presence on coffeehouse stages and poetry-friendly bars, where her style of delivery has become a benchmark for anyone with notions of spoken word performance.
